Hybrid powertrains, like the gas/electric powertrains in the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius provide double the fuel economy, half the emissions, and are much quieter than modern IC engines. A similar type of hybrid powertrain will enable trucks to improve fuel consumption by 10 or 15% without sacrificing power and towing capacity. Hybrid vehicles from automakers that haven?t met the sales quota will continue to qualify for a full tax credit through 2008. Hybrid electric drives must be accurate, stable, and efficient. Their operation demands that designers optimize switching strategies and switching elements alike.

Powertrains are backed by GM?s 5-year/100,000-mile warranty. Powertrains are based on Jaguar's 4.2-liter V-8 engine, mated to a ZF six-speed electronic automatic transmission. The XJ8 and Vanden Plas carry the naturally aspirated V-8, which delivers as much as 294 hp. Powertrains are carryovers from the '01 model year. The engines include a 2.4 liter 4-cylinder that is offered in the base model only, and a DOHC 2.7 liter V6 powers the rest of the trim lines.

Powertrains are carried over and the former LT3 is renamed LT2 and the old LT2 package is dropped. The 17" 5 spoke alloys from the LT3 and LTZ are being dropped and the LT2 is going to have 17" steel wheels with centers that look like alloys ala Malibu/G6 as std. Powertrains are covered for two years/200,000 miles; cab structure and hood for three years/300,000 miles; and frame rails for six years/750,000 miles. A full coverage warranty extends for one year/100,000 miles.

Power saved by this efficient use of the motor is available to launch more efficiently the vehicle rapidly and smoothly. The large torque multiplication possible with an IVT also allows use of an electric machine having smaller torque and electric current capacity for the same power delivered to the drive wheels. Power, supplied by the flow-driven rotation of the rotors, is transmitted into the nacelle by the rotating main shaft 10. A torque-dividing gearbox, comprising a sun gear 20, pressure-mounted on the perimeter of the main shaft and rotating with the shaft, interacts with five pinions 30 mounted around its perimeter, causing them to turn at a rotational rate greater than that of the sun-gear. Power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering also contributes to the Santa Fe's solid handling dynamics.

Powertrain units are delivered by truck to two final vehicle assembly plants in York, PA, and Kansas City, MO. Trucks are scheduled to leave the plant twice a day and the powertrains are loaded in a specific sequence determined by final assembly, so it was crucial that the plant not only stick to the schedule, but that they always had all the necessary parts to create over 75 different powertrain unit combinations. Power does not make its powertrain surveys public, but sells the reports to automakers for internal use. Buying the reports gives automakers access to the consultant's database of survey responses.

Seat height is adjustable and the steering wheel tilts and telescopes to fit most occupants. Some drivers will miss the lack of an adjustable lumbar support. Seating in the front buckets and rear 60-40-split-folding seat is improved with better upholstery tailoring and, importantly, significantly enhanced bolstering. The XR's driver seat is eight-way power adjustable.
